I went to the Dalhousie University Open House today. It was a pretty good time: cold and wet, but informative. I got a chance to talk to some of the Engineering profs about what I should do and where I should go, which was very helpful. However, looks like Dal isn't the school for me... much as I'd love to stay here, it just doesn't have the kind of program that I want (not to say that Dal isn't an excellent engineering school).
So it's looking like my best bet is Systems Design Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Engineering Physics. I'm hoping to do my undergrad in one of those, with maybe a minor in physics, and then do my graduate studies in Nuclear Engineering.
My top five choices for school are as follows:
* University of Waterloo (Waterloo, Ontario) for systems design- great school, known as 'Canada's MIT', and has a really well-known co-op program. (Plus, Logan and Sara both go there
* Queen's University (Kingston, Ontario) for engineering physics- another excellent engineering school, and they have the unique 'engineering physics' program, which combines studies in engineering and physics (who knew?) and would be a solid foundation for what I want to do. (Plus, Megan and Tim go there!)
* University of Toronto (Toronto, Ontario)- another well-known engineering school, and the largest university in Canada. I'd kind of be afraid of going there, though, just because it's so BIG! But I'll look into it, for sure.
* Dalhousie University (Halifax, Nova Scotia) for mechanical engineering- I just visited there today (as I said above), and while I was impressed with the campus and the program, it's not really my thing. I'm definitely still applying to it, though, and I know my dad would have a field day if I went there.
* Mount Allison University (Sackville, New Brunswick) for physics- Ahhh, MTA. I don't think I'll ever lose my attachment to that place. After spending week there this summer for Go Global, I know that it's definitely a great school, and has an excellent teaching staff. Now, if only they had engineering!
So there's a somewhat brief breakdown of where I want to go and why. Waterloo is my number 1 top choice, hands-down, but I'm not stupid enough to put all my eggs in one basket. If some other place offers me a lot of money, I'll probably go there. just sayin'
Thoughts?
